Johan Hermans of the UK (Orchids of Madagascar)

Johan Hermans has been growing and studying orchids for over 25 years, he has written and lectured extensively on a variety of orchid-related subjects including: the genus Dracula, Pleurothallidinae, the History of the RHS Orchid Committee, but his real passion is Madagascar and its orchids. He has travelled, lectured and judged widely making valuable contacts in the worldwide orchid community.
He is chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Committee, Chairman of the RHS Advisory sub-committee on Orchid Hybrid Registration, member of the RHS Awards Committee, a Trustee of the World Orchid Conference Trust, chairman of the International Orchid Committee, a board member of the European Orchid Council, a Fellow of the Linnean Society and an Honorary Research Associate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

* Chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Committee.

* Past chairman British Orchid Council Judging Committee with responsibility for training new judges and continuous development of 130 orchid judges on the scheme through symposia and conferences. Now member of the BOC judging committee.

* Gained almost 100 awards for plants from the RHS Orchid Committee, two RHS Gold and a Silver Gilt medal for displays of plants and photographs.

* Westonbirt medal 2005 for best grown plant.

* Actively participated in five World Orchid Conferences and gained five Gold,
two Silver medals and several trophies for displays and plants.

Publications & Research
* Author of numerous popular and scientific papers on the orchids of Madagascar, an illustrated checklist of the genus Dracula and several books on the Orchids of Madagascar published by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. Contributor to Curtis' Botanical Magazine and Genera Orchidacearum. Also authored Angraecoid Orchids with Joyce Stewart. Currently revising Liparis, Angraecum and Polystachya of Madagascar.

* Compiled and maintain a database of all orchids awarded by the RHS; published a popular CD of these together with a complete subject & author index of the Orchid Review.
